A Grant Page Is Not an Open Intake: Four Gates to Check Before You Apply
Direct sources. Clear status. Practical public information.
Reviewed November 8, 2026 · current official funder pages. A grant program may be real and still not be an open intake for a particular organization today.
Four gates before “apply”
| Gate | Question | Evidence to preserve |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Current window | Is a submission period open now, and what exact time zone controls the deadline? | Dated guideline, opening and closing time, amendment or update. |
| 2. Invitation or access | Is unsolicited intake accepted, or is an invitation code, contact, nomination, or existing account required? | Official invitation rule and the organization’s authorized access state. |
| 3. Applicant and project eligibility | Does the exact legal entity, geography, tax status, project, cost, and period fit? | Current eligibility and exclusions matched to the proposed applicant and work. |
| 4. Receiving portal | Does the official system expose the applicable opportunity and accept the required files? | Correct portal, profile, eligibility check, opportunity ID, and final receipt. |
Three current pages show why the gates differ
- Old National Bank Foundation: its page directs applicants to review current cycle dates, priorities, restrictions, and FAQs before applying; it also states applicant tax-status and footprint conditions.
- Good Things, For Life Foundation / GE Appliances: the page states that neither the foundation nor the corporation accepts unsolicited applications; applications are invitation-only during designated periods and require an invitation code.
- Humana Foundation: its grant areas have different periods. The page states an annual Q1 cycle for Connected Healthy Lives, invitation-only status for the Health Equity Innovation Fund and research grants, and a grant-management-system check for disaster-preparedness availability.
These examples are not a recommendation, eligibility decision, endorsement, or claim that funding is available to a named applicant. The official page and receiving system control.
Reversible intake card
- Save the page title, URL, observed date, program name, and responsible funder.
- Write one status per gate: verified open, verified closed, invitation-only, ineligible, portal unavailable, or unknown.
- Keep research, lead, eligible route, authorized application, submitted application, award, agreement, invoice, collected cash, output, and outcome separate.
- Estimate staff hours and required documents before beginning; stop when a gate is closed or unknown.
- Have the legal applicant and authorized owner approve any submission, certification, budget, or commitment.
- Preserve the final portal receipt; never treat a draft or profile registration as submission.
